Imagine standing among the tress onl a little knoll overlooking the Kishwaukee River, just North of Cherry Valley, Illinois. Looking around you see the property purchased by Thomas Poulton in 1850. As you look at the headstones, you see that this land was used as a burial land before Thomas purchased it. The earliest stone is from 1826, for Foster Blackington, then Mary Horton in 1839. The land has had many burials since then. We have many of our relatives that make their resting place there.
As I walk among the stones during the year putting up the flags for our veterans, I am amazed at the number we have resting there. Did you know that the First WAC from Rockford is resting there?
How many of you knew that we have an "Unsolved Mystery" resting in our cemetary. Marshall Pritchard was assinated Jan 24, 1879. He was just 34 yrs old. He was a tax collector for Cherry Valley Township at the time he was murdered in Rockford.
In July of 1905 a petition was sent to the Secretary of State asking to form the Cherry Valley Association. The first President was Fred King, Abram Davis, VP and Josephine Slater, secretary and Ray Lee the Treasurer.
Our responsibility is for care of the grounds; mowing, raking, removal of limbs, dead trees, and repair work on monuments.

I wonder how many people know that there is a "Potter's Field".
